Ice cream sodas are made by adding soda pop or seltzer to ice cream, and can also include flavorings like chocolate syrup or milk. The combination creates fizzy, frothy bubbles. Robert Green is credited with inventing the ice cream soda in 1874 at Philadelphia's sesquicentennial jamboree, when he mixed vanilla ice cream with soda to keep it cool after running out of ice shavings. Green's version also included 16 flavored syrups.
